As we start to go into 2022 I think it’s important to really reflect on these habits and break away from the ones that will ultimately lead you to burnout. This episode will be our community coming together to give you permission to drop these unhealthy habits before the new year.

So let’s dig into the 4 unhealthy habits that I’m leaving in 2021 and giving you permission to do the same.

1. Not asking for help.

Yes, in 2022 I’m going to be asking for way more help when I need it. I know that one of the best investments that I make in my business and even in my overall well being is when I get help and help can look like many different things. You can invest in help in terms of people and outsourcing so that you can do less work on your end and create more space for you to focus on other things inside of your business. This can look like hiring assistants, hiring personnel, or outsourcing certain tasks that you have to do.

Help can also look like having someone who can help guide you. This is the kind of help that I’m really going to be looking into for myself for 2022. A lot of times as small business owners we feel like we constantly have to be the leader, but the reality is that sometimes you need some guidance of your own to be able to hit your next goals or really serve your clients well. Identify what kind of help you personally need, and then don’t be afraid to ask for it.

2. Consuming content / Consuming before I create.

I’ve shared my thoughts on this many times, but I’ve noticed that I have to get better about taking my own advice on this one. It’s do important to have boundaries in place for social media and consuming content. I’ve noticed that over the last several months I’ve lost my passion and drive for posting on social media and instead just constantly open the apps to consume content. It’s constantly draining my creativity and keeping me from being able to create at my best.

If you’re just creating content for the sake of posting something and it isn’t actually your best, then it isn’t serving you. It’s crucial to put boundaries in place for when and how long you allow yourself to consume content, and to make sure that you’ve created space for you to create for yourself and decide what you want to post and talk about without letting it be influenced by what you see when you scroll. For myself, I plan to take the rest of 2021 off social media altogether, so I can come back in 2022 with my creativity flowing and feeling refreshed and ready to create content.

3. Allowing my business to be my hobby.

This is one that was born out of necessity for me, but I’ve come to realize is now a choice. In my previous role as an actuary, I used to spend my time outside of work studying to pass exams and do well at work. Studying became my hobby, and in 2015 when I left my job to work on my business full-time, that love for studying turned into working on my business. My business became both my job and my hobby, and started to take up all of my time.

When we own our own business, it’s easy to feel like we constantly have to be productive. The reality is that sitting down to read a book (that isn’t about your business) or do something that feels relaxing or refreshing to you and has nothing to do with your business is actually really helpful to you as a human being. You don’t have to be productive in your business at all times or always focused on making money. I’ll definitely be leaving this habit behind as I start to find friends and hobbies to enjoy that are completely outside of my business.

4. Conflating my business and life goals with the goals of the industry.

This last one is a big, big shift for me, and one that I didn’t really know how to articulate for a long time. There’s so much talk in our industry about goals, specifically financial ones, and what “success” in business looks like. When I first started out as self-employed, making $1,000 a month online was something that so many people couldn't even imagine, but the industry has advanced beyond that. There’s constantly talk of hitting not even six figures, but seven, and I’ve even heard talk of scaling to an eight figure business. So it’s constantly evolving, which is great and human, but it’s constantly a moving target of what we consider success.

What really made this hit me was hitting the six figure mark and still feeling like it wasn’t good enough because there’s always these moving targets of what your business should be aiming for. It started pulling me away from why I wanted to do this in the first place and where I wanted to spend my time and energy, and it’s beyond just the money. I love one-on-one coaching and working less than 40 hours a week, and I don’t feel the need to scale to a huge group coaching program and hit multiple six figures. My reasoning for hitting my financial goals in business was to be able to pay myself well and outsource the help that I wanted, and I can do that, so mixing my goals with those of the industry doesn’t serve me, and is something I’m leaving behind this year.

Hopefully this was helpful for you! I feel like I opened up my heart a little bit and maybe one of these unhealthy habits resonated with you too. I encourage you to really reflect on these habits and any others that you feel aren’t serving you well, and leave them in 2021, so you can kick 2022 off strong!
